Gun Control Will Not Protect Our Kids

On June 8, 2022, the United States House passed the “Protecting Our Kids Act” (H.R. 7910). This is a comprehensive gun control bill that was passed in the aftermath of the Buffalo and Uvalde mass shootings.

Laurence Vance of LewRockwell.com listed off what this gun control bill does:

  • generally prohibits the sale or transfer of certain semiautomatic firearms to individuals who are under 21 years of age;
  • establishes new federal criminal offenses for gun trafficking and related conduct;
  • establishes a federal statutory framework to regulate ghost guns (i.e., guns without serial numbers);
  • establishes a framework to regulate the storage of firearms on residential premises at the federal, state, and tribal levels;
  • subjects bump stocks to regulation under federal firearms laws; and
  • generally prohibits the import, sale, manufacture, transfer, and possession of large capacity ammunition feeding devices.

The final vote ended up being 223-204. Only two Democrats opposed this bill — Maine Congressman Jared Golden and Oregon Congressman Kurt Schrader. On the other hand, five Republicans voted for this gun control bill. Those Republicans were Pennsylvania Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick, Ohio Congressman Anthony Gonzalez, New York Congressman Chris Jacobs, Illinois Congressman Adam Kinzinger, and Michigan Congressman Fred Upton.

None of these measures will protect our children, nor any other Americans for that matter. Criminals prefer disarmed victims or people who have more difficulty arming themselves. Let’s face it, criminals don’t care about laws and will do anything possible to carry out their dirty needs.

It’s ultimately lawful civilians or groupings of lawful civilians that can stop these criminals. Arbitrary regulations that infringe on Americans’ traditional freedoms do not do that.
