New Law in New York Will Use Term “Incarcerated Individual”  as Opposed to “Inmate”

A society where its ruling class arbitrarily changes the definition of words is one that is not interested in the truth and is more concerned with spreading irrationality.

In the latest episode of politicians channeling Orwellian newspeak, New York Governor Kathy Hochul is now calling for criminals to be called “justice-involved individuals.”

The law is designed to “promote greater fairness and restore dignity” for criminals while also calling prison inmates “incarcerated individuals” from now on.

In effect, Hochul and her Democratic ilk believe that words such as “criminal” and “inmate” come with social stigma, thereby necessitating a change in terminology. As Libby Emmons of The Post-Millenial observed, “The language substantially takes the responsibility for the commission of their crimes off of them, and places it on the system which tried and punished them for it.”

At some point, we have to hold people accountable for their actions and brand them for what they are. By not doing so, we only foment irrationality and allow political correctness to continue to seep in throughout the culture. This will only encourage more anti-social behavior as many potential criminals will be led to believe that their actions are not their fault but are a product of the “system” or “society.” People ultimately have to be held accountable for their actions.

Words and definitions matter. We cannot continue to let the Left change the definition of words and dictate the terms of the debate.

For the sake of maintaining a rational society, we must not let cultural leftist politicians manipulate our language at will. It’s time to fight back and protect our language’s integrity from politically correct hacks.
