The massacre that took place in Uvalde, Texas on May 24, 2022 was a tragedy of epic proportions.
A deranged gunman slaughtered 19 children and two teachers at Robb Elementary School in cold blood.
Even more bone-chilling were reports that police waited outside for 40 minutes as the murderer committed this atrocity.
Per reports from what happened at the scene of the massacre, frightened parents were screaming at law enforcement to storm the school for 40 minutes until a Border Patrol team finally took out the gunman.
“Go in there! Go in there!” parents allegedly yelled.
Raul Ortiz, Chief of the U.S. Border Patrol, claimed that police drew up a plan as promptly as possible. Officers had reportedly engaged the shooter prior to several members of a Border Patrol tactical team, a search and rescue responder, and a few other agents entered the school to confront the murderer.
“They didn’t hesitate. They came up with a plan. They entered that classroom and they took care of the situation as quickly as they possibly could,” Ortiz asserted.
Parents were still disappointed with the amount of time that went by until law enforcement neutralized the shooter. Some even put forward the idea of storming into the school before the police.
“Let’s just rush in because the cops aren’t doing anything like they are supposed to,” declared Javier Cazares, whose daughter was murdered in the attack. “More could have been done.”
“They were unprepared,” he continued.
Time will tell if there was massive police malfeasance involved during this incident.
If these allegations of police delaying their entry into the school are true, they further prove the pro-Second Amendment adage that “when seconds count, the police are minutes away.”
It’s time to recognize that law enforcement can only do so much. Law enforcement play a critical role in maintaining some semblance of order.
But in these mass shooter situations schools must be allowed to have armed staff and security personnel to fully secure their venues.
On top of that, uncomfortable questions must be asked about school discipline measures, mental health checks for students that demonstrate troubling behavior, and the breakdown of the family. All of these are factors that contribute to the mass shooting problems that occasionally pop in the US.
Several things are certain though: Gun-free zones increase the probability of mass shootings and tougher gun control will do nothing to deter criminals. In fact, civilian disarmament will only leave more people defenseless and susceptible to deranged gunmen’s acts of violence.
