Wacky political ideas can easily be exposed through free speech and debate.
That’s one of the beauties of the American political system, which puts free speech on a pedestal. However, those who push for crazy ideas recognize free speech as an obstacle and do everything possible to undermine discourse.
Take for example green energy. While a free society would allow for all kinds of energy sources to compete in the marketplace, businesses and consumers have determined that non-renewable energy sources are the most reliable forms of energy to keep the economy running.
This reality has not registered with many green energy proponents who insist on making the use of this energy mandatory or at least subsidized by the state. The results of this have been dismal on many working class Americans who cannot afford to use energy sources that are more expensive and unreliable.
As a result of the attempts to make the American economy “greener”, there has been a growing movement in opposition to these attempts to radically transform the country’s energy sector.
This has clearly threatened the powers that be, who view opposition to their green projects as an existential threat.
Just look at what Joe Biden’s national climate advisor Gina McCarthy had to say about opposition to the country’s “green energy transition.”
According to a report by Steve Watson at Summit News, McCarthy believes that social media companies should be censoring individuals who criticize the Biden regime’s green energy policies.
In an interview with an Axios reporter, McCarthy said “Now it’s not so much denying the problem. What the [fossil fuel] industry is now doing is seeding doubt about the costs associated with [green energy] and whether they work or not.”
She continued, “We need the tech companies to really jump in,” and confront “disinformation.”
McCarthy said that criticizing the negative effects of a green energy transition is “equally dangerous to denial,” and stressed that “we have to move fast.”
You know that your political ideas suck when they require censorship. The results of green energy in blue states like California and throughout continental Europe speak for themselves.
Hence, the ruling class’s desire to use social media as the proverbial Pinkertons against those who dare question the regime narrative. The fact is that the US enjoys very strong free speech protections at the political level, especially when compared to other Western countries.
As a result, the DC ruling class has to turn to privatized forms of censorship. Irrespective of the means of carrying out censorship, this kind of behavior should be categorically opposed by anyone who truly believes in free speech.
In the era of social media, policymakers can prevent such censorship efforts by making the social media ecosystem a true public square. The best way to do that is by establishing an Internet Bill of Rights.
